The Wall Paintings at Anzy-le-Duc

 A work of art at risk

In addition to its well known and rich collection of decorative sculpture, the church at Anzy-le-Duc is similarly endowed with magnificent wall paintings. 
These medieval works, restored fairly faithfully by the painter Maurice in the 19th century, adorn the entire choir of the church.

The oven vault of the main apse is decorated with an ascending Christ in Glory carried by two angels in a tympanum.Underneath, there is a frieze containing the 12 apostles and 3 female saints.The symbols of the 4 evangelists can be seen between the pilasters separating the bays.

The Saint John's murder

In the apsidal chapel on the right, which is by far the better preserved, are 8 scenes depicting the life of John the Baptist. In the apsidal chapel on the left, which is in very poor condition, are paintings of scenes from the life of St James the Greater.

In addition to their obvious artistic interest, these paintings provide an illustration of the subjects chosen to decorate church sanctuaries in the Middle Ages.

In order to carry out the restoration work necessary for their preservation,
the association of “Friends of Romanesque Churches” (“Amis de l’Eglise romane”) is taking steps to raise funds and to make visitors aware of the challenge which we face in preserving our heritage.
