The Tower of Saint Martin

The tower of the church of St Martingives it a characteristic silhouette, unique in the Charolais-Brionnais.

This tower, called bellcote, bell gable or wall tower, consists of a double arch, resting in the centre on slender colonnettes with carved capitals. This structure is topped by a pyramidal roof.

The bell-tower of Saint Martin's church

It is difficult to tell at which period this tower was built. There is no trace of an earlier tower. Today, the tower has only one remaining bell, which is rung by hand.

Romanesque church in the South West of France

Although this kind of tower is found throughout France, it is the unique example in Charolais-Brionnais.  It is a style used more extensively in the south-west of France and in Picardy.
