The Baroque Chapel of Montceaux-l'Etoile

Following the death of his young wife in 1775, Marquis Abel de Vichy-Champrond, lord of the manor, decided to build a funeral chapel in the apse of the church.  Construction began in 1777.  The chapel is located in the extension to the small Romanesque apse.

It seems that the church received the mausoleum of the marquis only in 1793.  In the same year the marquis was executed at Lyon sand his body would never be interred in the seigneurial chapel.

On the top of the vault

The chapel was handsomely furnished in baroque style in the 18th century. The curved altar is faced in marble.  At the rear, the altar piece has at its centre a painting of the Assumption of the Virgin.

The altar

The surrounding decorations, in rococo style, were carried out in 1854.  The arches are decorated with gilded foliage, joining at the centre of the vault, where there is a painted oval fresco representing cherubs.

This tomb chapel from the 18th century, in rococo style, is the only monument of its kind in Charolais-Brionnais, along with the church of Fleury-la-Montagne.
