Carved ornementation in Iguerande Church

The interior of the church in Iguerande, itself plain and spare, has some rich sculptural ornamentation. This decoration extends over 38 capitals and the bases of the pillars of the nave and choir. Variations in workmanship and composition suggest the involvement of two distinct workshops of sculptors.

The iconographic subjects are typical, with an abundance of plant motifs and abstract designs, and some figured decorations (greenmen, animal heads).

Devils on abase

On the second column of the main nave, on the north side, one particular capital draws the attention of the visitor. On either side of the head of the column there appears a dog playing the lyre, with a Cyclops on the panpipe.

This strange carving is a representation of the perils of secular music.  Although not a sin in itself, it is an encouragement to vice. The capital serves as a warning to the faithful.
